Explained in the Shuowen Jiezi (Shuowen Jiezi) as the curved part of a carriage's yoke. Also explained in the Guangyun (Guangyun) as to return or yield, referring to vehicles yielding to each other. Also pronounced xu yan cut in the Guangyun (Guangyun), and is the same as the character "xuan."
