According to the Analytical Dictionary of Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it means to tear.
In the Eulogy for the Guangcheng Park (Guangcheng Song) by Ma Rong, it is written: to tear and expose.
Another source states it means to gesture with the hand.
In the Book of Changes (Yijing), line on humility, it says: to display humility.
Wang Bi commentary: To gesture and display are both forms of humility.
Cheng commentary: It is the image of spreading and distributing.
Zhu Xi Basic Meaning commentary: It means to display or manifest.
Note: According to the Analytical Dictionary of Characters, it is pronounced gui, but the character gui is an error. According to the Nine Classics Character Dictionary (Jiujing Ziyi), the characters for displaying a flag and this character are the same, and they are commonly written as the character for waving.
Also pronounced wei. It means to assist.
In the Great Mystery (Taijing) by Yang Xiong, it states: in matters of appearance, apply respect and solemnity.
Commentary: Appearance is called respectful, respect becomes solemn, and solemnity is to respect and assist in courtesy.
