Pronounced huan.
As stated in the Analytical Dictionary of Chinese Characters (Shuowen): The walls surrounding a marketplace. Composed of the radical for gate and the element for huan, which conveys both meaning and sound.
According to the Tang Dynasty Rhyme Dictionary (Tangyun) and the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), it refers to a market enclosure.
It is also defined as a road or pathway in the Expanded Pronunciation Dictionary (Boya).
In the Western Metropolis Rhapsody (Xijing Fu) by Zhang Heng: "The thoroughfares and the market enclosures." The commentary notes that it refers to the boundaries of a market.
Additionally, as noted in the Rectified Rhymes (Zhengyun), it is also pronounced wan, with the same meaning.
