"Tang Yun" states that this character is pronounced huǎn (falling tone), with the same sound as "hàn." "Yu Pian" records it as the name of a type of grass. "Shi Wu Ben Cao" mentions cǎo cài, whose stems are soft, leaves are finely divided, and in the third month it produces small yellow flowers and small pods containing tiny seeds. Both the roots and leaves are edible, and it is commonly called là mǐ cài. "Lin Hong's Shan Jia Qing Gong" records that Zhu Xi (courtesy name Hui'an) often ate cǎo cài as a vegetable after meals, and people in the areas of Xūjiāng, Jiànyáng, and Yánlíng all liked to eat it.
