You Collection, Middle Volume. Radical: Pig (shǐ). Kangxi strokes: 13. Page 1196, Entry 14. Pronounced hai. Erya, Explanation of Animals: A pig with all four hooves white is called a gai. Commentary: A hoof is a foot. Also pronounced gai. Also pronounced ai. Also pronounced hai (rising tone). The meaning is the same. According to the Erya Commentary by Xing Bing, and the commentary by Zheng Xuan on the Book of Odes (Shijing), gai is considered synonymous with hai. The term hai refers to restless, rapid movement. While the characters hai and gai are different, their meaning is the same. Yang Shen states in his Treatise on Characters (Zishu) that gai is the same as hai. Mao’s Rhymes and the Orthography (Zhengyun) state that gai is also written as hai, but this is incorrect.
