It also refers to a type of bird. According to the "Notes on the Biography of Yang Xiong" in the "Book of Han (Qian Hanshu)", Mai Lei (䤥) is another name for the bird Tiju (鷤䳏). This bird calls during the spring plowing season, signaling the start of agricultural activities, hence its name Mai Lei. It is also called the cuckoo, perhaps because hearing its call reminds people to buy Mai Lei (farming tools) and hoes for sowing grain.
