According to the Sound Rhymes (Jiyun) and the Standard Rhymes (Zhengyun), pronounced guǎi.
According to the Classified Chapters (Leipian), it is the same as the character for crutch. Also written as the variant form (guǎi). A staff used by the elderly.
According to the History of the Five Dynasties (Wudaishi): During the Later Han dynasty, the emperor dispatched Wang Jun to present a memorial to the Khitan leader Yelu. Yelu bestowed upon him a wooden staff. When Wang Jun returned carrying it, the Khitan people would step aside and clear the road upon seeing it.
Also, according to the Sound Rhymes (Jiyun), pronounced dí. Also pronounced guǎ. The meaning is the same.
