Yang Xiong's "Fan Sao" states: "I fear the tī tiè will cry out, thus the fragrance of a hundred grasses will cease before their time."
Shigu explains: "Tī tiè is a type of bird. Another name for it is 'mai', also called 'zi gui', and also 'du juan'. It usually calls out at the beginning of summer, and when it calls, the fragrance of all flowers and plants ceases, and agricultural activities begin."
