Pronounced gu
Name of a river. According to the Analytical Dictionary of Characters (Shuowen jiezi), the water originates at Suorenshufu Mountain in Yanmen and flows northeast into the sea. According to the Classic of Waterways (Shuijing), the Gu River meets the Qing River at Quanzhou County and flows east into the sea. The Qing River is the tail end of the Gu River. The commentary notes that the Qing, Zhan, Zhang, Huan, Yi, Lai, Ru, Gu, and Hutuo rivers all converge into the sea, hence it is called the tail end of the Gu River. Common usage confuses it with the character for branch or school, which is incorrect. According to the Collection of Corrected Characters (Peixi ji), it is used for the name of the water. Using it to mean a school or branch is an error.
