Tang Yun, Jiyun, Yunhui, and Zhengyun pronounce it gou. Shuo Wen states it means to suckle. It is derived from the radical for child and a phonetic component. Xu Kai notes that people of the state of Chu call suckling gou, which is why the name for a child born to a noble is called goufangtu. It is commonly written as the character for valley. It also means dim or dull, referring to a state of lacking knowledge or intelligence. According to Yupian, it is pronounced nou; Jiyun states it is pronounced nou. The meaning is the same.
