According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it means to decorate or to put in order. Another interpretation is to alter or change. According to the Classified Compilation (Leipian), it means to be cautious or careful. It is also used in personal names, such as Yu Jian and Xi Jian, found in the History of Song (Songshi), Table of the Imperial Clan.
