According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it refers to a large drum. According to the Extensive Rhymes (Guangyun), it is used for labor tasks, as a vehicle drum measuring one zhang and two chi in length.
According to the Rites of Zhou (Zhouli), Earth Office, Drummer: Use the gao drum to summon and stimulate for labor tasks.
According to the Book of Odes (Shijing), Greater Odes: The gao drum cannot overcome.
It is also written in the variant form gāo. According to the Rites of Zhou (Zhouli), Winter Office, Artificers' Record: Fabricate the gao drum, measuring one xun and four chi.
