The Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi) defines it as the appearance of something visible within the crevices of a stone. Additionally, it is pronounced pu. It has the same pronunciation as the character for pave. It refers to the appearance of stone grain patterns becoming visible.
