Book of Odes (Shijing), Zhou South section: The tail of the bream is red. Commentary: When a fish is tired, its tail becomes red. Sub-commentary: The tail of the bream is not red by nature; it becomes red due to fatigue.
Commentary by Lu Ji: The bream is wide and thin, rich in fat and lacking stamina, with fine scales; it is a delicious fish.
Literary Expositor (Erya), Explaining Fish: The bream is called pi. Note: In the Jiangdong region, the bream is called bian. It is also known as pi. The bream from the Liang River is particularly excellent, hence the local saying: If you live and rely on your food supply, choose the Liang River bream.
Correct Meaning of Characters (Zhengzitong): The bream has a small head, a shrunken neck, a wide belly, an arched back, fine scales, and a blue-white color; the fat inside its belly is very rich.
