Zi Collection, Upper Volume, Page 10, Entry 05 Radical: Fire (huǒ) Pronounced fan (falling tone) Also pronounced fan (rising tone) See also 膰 (fán) From "Guangyun" and "Jiyun," with the fanqie of Yuan, pronounced the same as "fan." "Shuowen Jiezi" explains it as roasted sacrificial meat in the ancestral temple. The character is composed of "zhi" for meaning and "fan" for sound. "Chunqiu Zhuan" records that when the Son of Heaven performed sacrifices, this cooked meat was prepared and presented to feudal lords of the same surname. In "Yupian," there is also an alternative form written as "膰." "Jiyun" mentions other variant forms.
