Xu Collection, Lower Volume Radical: Food (shí) Character: Fen Kangxi Strokes: 18 Page 1423, Entry 15 Pronounced fen. Refers to partially steamed rice. It is the same as the character fen. Book of Odes (Shijing), Greater Odes (Daya): Scoop out the wine and pour it into this vessel; it can be used to steam rice. Notes: Fen refers to the process of steaming rice until it is half-cooked, pouring water over it, and then steaming it a second time. It was originally written as fen. The Dictionary of Chinese Characters (Zihui) simplified the character and placed it under the eight-stroke radical, which is incorrect. This has now been rectified.
