According to Tang Rhymes (Tangyun), it is pronounced fen. According to Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), Rhyme Meetings (Yunhui), and Correct Rhymes (Zhengyun), it is pronounced fen. Jade Chapters (Yupian) states that it is a cloth for wiping things. Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi) states that in the Chu region, a large cloth is called fen.
It is also used interchangeably with fen. The Book of Rites (Liji) states: Wear a fen-shui at the left side. The Commentary states: A fen-shui is a cloth worn for wiping things. Even today, there are people in the Qi region who use the word fen. The Rites of Zhou (Zhouli) states: A mat of rushes with a fen border. The Commentary states: A fen resembles a ribbon, patterned and relatively narrow.
Also, according to Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), it is pronounced fen, with the same meaning.
