According to the Sound Rhymes (Jiyun), pronounced nǜ. It means ashamed. Originally written as niǔ. Also written as ér (胹). Furthermore, according to the Rhyme Collection (Yunhui), pronounced ěr (rising tone), and according to the Correct Rhymes (Zhengyun), pronounced ěr (falling tone). It means to harmonize. As stated in the Zhuangzi (Zhuangzi), Tianxia Pian chapter, It harmonizes with joy. The Commentary on Sounds and Meanings (Yinyi) notes that this means to harmonize all things. Additionally, according to the Broad Rhymes (Guangyun) and the Correct Rhymes (Zhengyun), as well as the Rhyme Collection (Yunhui), pronounced ér. The meaning is the same. The original carving of the character ér (胹) was written with the radical for heart (nǜ) instead of the radical for ear.
