In the Book of Odes (Shijing), Zheng Airs: Emerging from the inner wall and gate tower, there is a girl as radiant as cogon grass flowers. The commentary states that the tower is a city tower. The Explanatory Text notes that for the character in the Zheng region, the pronunciation is du. Sun Yan states that it is an accumulation of earth like an island in water, used for observing auspicious or ominous portents.

Su Shi, while reading the Transmission of the Lamp (Chuandenglu) by night, saw the wick of his lamp burn into the shape of a monk character.
