Zi Collection, Page Position: Lower. Radical: Ice (bīng). Dòng. Kangxi stroke count: 10. Page: 132, Number: 07. According to the Tang Rhymes (Tangyun), Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), Rhyme Convergence (Yunhui), and Correct Rhymes (Zhengyun), the pronunciation follows the fanqie phonetic system of duō and gòng, read as the departing tone of dōng. The Analytical Dictionary of Characters (Shuowen Jiezi) defines the term as ice. The Book of Rites (Liji) records in the Monthly Ordinances (Yueling) that during the first month of winter, the earth begins to freeze, and during the first month of spring, the east wind thaws the ice. The Comprehensive Meaning of Customs (Fengsu Tong) states that thick layers of ice are called dòng. Furthermore, the Tang Rhymes provide an alternative fanqie of dé and hóng, while the Collected Rhymes and Rhyme Convergence provide dū and lóng, all resulting in the pronunciation dōng with the same meaning.
