According to Explanation of Writing and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen), it means a small lamb. Pronounced like da. According to Jade Chapters (Yupian), it means to be born. Also, according to Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), it is used interchangeably with da. In the Book of Odes (Shijing), Great Odes section: "When her months had come to an end, she gave birth to a son, as if it were a lamb." The Commentary (Zhuan) says: da means to be born.
