Si Collection, Upper Volume Radical: Fire (huǒ) Character: Dao Kangxi Stroke Count: 18 Page 685, Entry 35 Pronounced dao (falling tone). According to the Analytical Dictionary of Chinese Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it means to cover and shine upon universally. In the Minor Dictionary of Refined Expressions (Xiao Erya), dao means to cover. In the Commentary of Zuo (Gongyang Zhuan), for the thirteenth year of Duke Wen, it states the Duke of Zhou provides a plentiful supply, and the Duke of Lu provides a covering. The commentary states that "plentiful" refers to new grain, and "covering" refers to shielding or capping, hence placing the new on top of the old. The sub-commentary explains that dao is defined as to cover, as in the Book of Zhou (Zhoushu) regarding covering with yellow earth. The Duke of Zhou providing a plentiful supply means filling the vessels with new grain. The Duke of Lu providing a covering means placing the new over the old, adjusting it until it is level. The Explanation of Text states that dao is pronounced bao (falling tone). One version is written as the character for wave (tao), pronounced the same. In the Expanded Dictionary of Sounds and Meanings (Guangyun), it is the same as the character for canopy (chou). In the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), it is sometimes written as the variant form (chou). It is also interchangeably used with the character for honest (dun). In the Rites of Zhou (Zhouli), Ministry of Spring, Master of Tables and Mats, for every dun with one table, the commentary states that dun is read as dao, meaning to cover. Also, pronounced tao. The meaning is the same. Also, pronounced chou. The meaning is the same. In the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), it is sometimes written as the character for burning (ran). According to the Collection of Correct Characters (Zhengzitong), the distinct form uses the radical for cloth (jin), written as chou.
