Collected Rimes (Jiyun): Pronounced dai. Refers to the hawksbill sea turtle.
Jade Compendium (Yupian): Commonly, the term for hawksbill sea turtle is written as dai mao instead of the variant form dai mao.
Records of Strange Things (Yiwuzhi): Its shape resembles a turtle, and it lives in the South Sea. Large ones are like coarse bamboo mats, with scales on their backs that are as large as fans and patterned. When making objects, the scales are boiled to make them as soft as leather.
