Pronounced duo. Duo-jiu is the name of a bird.
Classic of Etymology (Erya), Explanation of Birds: The duo-jiu is a pheasant.
Guo commentary: The duo is as large as a pigeon and resembles a female pheasant. It has feet without a hind toe and a forked tail. As a bird, it is stupid and hasty, flying in flocks, and originates from the northern desert regions.
Sub-commentary: It is also called yi-yi, which is the so-called pheasant yi-yi.
Classic of Birds (Qin jing): To snatch is called duo.
Commentary: Like a sparrow hawk but smaller, it snatches birds and sparrows as if robbing them.
Examination of Strange Things (Yiwu kao): The fan-que is the duo.
Jade Chapter (Yupian): The duo is also called the crown sparrow.
Materia Medica (Bencao): Also known as the tujue-huan.
Zhang Xie, Seven Commands (Qi ming): Morning mallards and dewy cranes, frosty duo and yellow sparrows.
