In the Tang Rhyme (Tangyun), Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), and Rhyme Compilation (Yunhui), the pronunciation is described as crossing over, and in the Orthodox Rhymes (Zhengyun), it is also described as crossing over; all are pronounced dù.
In the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen), it is defined as to ferry or to cross.
In the Broad Refinement (Guangya), it is defined as to depart or to connect.
It is also commonly written as the variant form (dù).
In the Biography of Jia Yi from the History of the Former Han (Qianhan Shu), it is written: To cross the rivers without rudder or oar.
In the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), it is sometimes written in the variant form.
