Zi Collection, Page Position: Upper, Radical: Dipper (dǒu), Page 411, Entry 03 The "Jade Scripts" (Yupián) states this is a common variant of the character "dou" (dipper). The "Book of Han" (Qian Hanshu), "Annals of Emperor Ping" (Píngdì Jì), records: "The common people captured locusts and presented them to officials, receiving money per dou (dipper) of locusts." The "Book of Later Han" (Hòuhànshū), "Biography of Zhòngcháng Tǒng" (Zhòngcháng Tǒng Zhuàn), writes: "Let each mu (field) yield three hu (bushels) of grain, and collect one dou (dipper) per hu." The "Guanzi" (Guǎnzi), "Chapter on Horse Riding" (Chéngmǎ Piān), records: "Six bu (steps) make one dou (dipper)."
