Broad Rhymes (Guangyun): Pronounced dian. Extensive Rhymes (Jiyun) and Rhyme Collection (Yunhui): Pronounced dian. Equivalent to the character dian (a mental disorder). Also, according to Extensive Rhymes (Jiyun), it means madness. According to Correct Meaning through Investigation (Zhengzitong), it refers to constant, erratic laughter, confusion, and disorder. According to the Commentary on the Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon: Basic Questions (Huangdi Suwen Zhu), excessive joy is called dian, while excessive anger is called madness. Joy is the intent of the heart; therefore, when the heart is hot, one becomes joyful and develops dian. Anger is the intent of the liver; fire suppresses metal, making it unable to pacify wood, therefore when the liver is excessive, one becomes angry and develops madness.
