Kangxi Dictionary

Pronounced tuá xié (entering tone), also pronounced dá xié (entering tone) in "Jiyun" and "Yunhui," with the same pronunciation as "dié." "Shuowen Jiezi" records that Yang Xiong believed ancient judges, when deciding cases, needed three days of deliberation to reach a suitable verdict before execution. The character's form is composed of "jīng" and "yí." The Xin Dynasty, established by Wang Mang, considered the three "rì" in the character "dié" to be too prosperous, so they were changed to three "tián." "Jiujing Ziyang" points out that classical literature has since followed this practice, using the character "dié." Also written as "dié."
