Also, in the Erya (Approaching Elegance), the entry for zhen refers to ma lan (a plant). The commentary notes: That which is currently called dian is this.
Also, in the Tongya (Comprehensive Elegance): The rippling waves of a lake or marsh are called dian.
In the Commentary on the Water Classic (Shuijing Zhu): The Wen River flows west and merges with another river, then flows southwest into the Mao Du dian. Dian is a variant name for a pond or body of water.
It is also used interchangeably with dian.
In the Yupian (Jade Tablet): Sometimes written as a variant form. Frequently written as dian.
