Kangxi Dictionary

Tang Yun and Jiyun both state it is pronounced dian (falling tone). Shuowen Jiezi states it means a house is leaning or sinking. Another explanation says it means to press down. Guangyun defines it as poverty or distress. Some versions write it as a variant form (dian), belonging to the Radical: Earth (tǔ). Additionally, Guangyun states it is pronounced die (entering tone), while Jiyun and Leipian state it is pronounced xie (entering tone), with the pronunciation being the same as die. The meaning is the same. Zhengzitong states this is a simplified form of the character dian.
