Zi Collection, Upper Volume, Page 36, Entry 01 According to "Jiyun" (集韵), the character "de" (得) was anciently written as "dào" (䙷). "Shuowen Jiezi" (说文解字) explains its character form as composed of "jian" (见) and "cun" (寸). "Cun" (寸) signifies measurement and also represents the hand. Furthermore, "Leipian" (类篇) states that "de" (得) means to walk and obtain something. Anciently, there were also abbreviated forms, sometimes written as "de" (㝶).
