According to the Classified Collection of Characters (Leipian), liang-dang is a type of garment. According to the Explanation of Names (Shiming), one part covers the chest and one part covers the back. In the Miscellaneous Records of the Western Capital (Xijing Zaji), it is noted that the younger sister of Zhao Feiyan gave Feiyan an embroidered dang with gold inlay.
According to the Jade Chapters (Yupian), it also refers to the crotch of trousers. According to the commentary on the Biography of Consort Families in the Former Han (Qianhan Waishi Zhuan), it refers to what are now known as trousers with reinforced crotches. In the Essay on the Great Man by Ruan Ji, it is written that in walking one dares not depart from the seams, and in movement one dares not expose the crotch of the trousers.
