According to the Sound Rhymes (Jiyun), the Rhyme Collection (Yunhui), and the Correct Rhymes (Zhengyun), it is pronounced cai.
According to the Jade Chapters (Yupian), it refers to a type of oak tree.
In the Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji), Annals of the First Emperor: "Oak rafters left unscraped." The commentary notes that this is the name of a tree. It is also written as cai.
Also, in the Book of Han (Hanshu), Biography of Yang Xiong: "The summer palaces had oak rafters, as in the reigns of Tang and Yu." The commentary notes that this refers to the sawtooth oak.
Also, according to the Jade Chapters, it is pronounced cai (falling tone) according to the Tang Rhymes (Tangyun), the Rhyme Collection (Yunhui), and the Correct Rhymes (Zhengyun). The meaning is the same.
