According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen), in the Qin region it is called roof rafters, in the Zhou region it is called rafters (cui), and in the Qi and Lu regions it is called rafters (jue). According to the Commentary on the Explanation of Palaces in the Er Ya (Er Ya Shigong), rafters are roof timbers, also called rafters (cui lv). According to the Western Capital Rhapsody (Xijing Fu) by Zhang Heng, the rafters are decorated with colors and jade discs. The commentary notes that decorated rafters refer to rafters painted with patterns. Also pronounced shuai. Also pronounced zhui. The meanings are the same.
