Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), Rhyme Meetings (Yunhui), and Correct Rhymes (Zhengyun): Pronounced chuàn. To seize by improper means is called cuan.
Approaching Elegance (Erya), Explanation of Ancient Words (Shigu): Cuan means to take. Annotation: Cuan means to seize.
History of the Former Han (Qian Hanshu), Biography of Wei Qing: Wei Qing served at Jianzhang Palace and was not yet famous. The Grand Princess arrested and imprisoned Wei Qing, intending to kill him. His friend Gongsun Ao and other brave men went and forcibly rescued him. Annotation: Shigu states that to seize by improper means is called cuan.
It also refers to shooting birds with an arrow attached to a string.
Supplement to the Collection of Characters (Zihuibu): In the Yangzi, it says: As wild geese fly into the high, distant sky, how can the fowler hit them? Other versions write this as cuan, which is incorrect. The character cuan originally belongs to the grass radical and does not belong to any other radical.
