Chou Collection, Middle Volume. Radical: Earth (tǔ). Entry: Zūn. Kangxi strokes: 15. Page 239, Entry 03.
According to the Zhengzitong (Correction of Characters), it is identical to zūn (a wine vessel). As noted in the Tongya (Comprehensive Elegance), the Shuowen Jiezi (Explaining Single and Compounding Characters) records the character with the earth radical (shì), though this was merely the subjective conjecture of Xu Shen. Since the publication of the official edition of the Erya (Approaching Elegance), Wang's Shikao (Examination of the Classic of Poetry), and various editions of the Jiujing Kaoyi (Critical Examination of the Nine Classics), all have used the earth radical (tǔ). During the Tang and Song dynasties, some authors used the term zūnzūn; upon careful investigation, it appears that the character is a corruption of zūn, and using the earth radical (tǔ) lacks justification, let alone using the earth radical (shì). Based on the analysis in the Tongya, the Zihui (Compendium of Characters) entry claiming it uses the earth radical (tǔ) and is therefore distinct from the version using the earth radical (shì) represents an error in textual research.
