Pronounced cong.
In the Shuowen Jiezi (Shuowen), it means to examine. In the Guangyun, it means to hear, to be clear, to understand, and to listen. In the Book of Documents (Shangshu), specifically the Great Plan (Hongfan) chapter, it is said that to be perceptive is to form plans. In the Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji), specifically the Biography of Lord Shang, it states that checking one's own hearing is called perception, and introspection is called clarity. In the Guanzi, specifically the Zhouhe chapter, it states that the ear governs hearing; hearing must be compliant with what is heard, and when what is heard is accurate, it is called perception. The commentary notes that when the ears hear things that are both compliant and accurate, it is called perception.
Also, according to the Yunbu, it rhymes with the sound cang. In the Rhapsody on the Willow by Chen Lin: Majestic is the Son of Heaven, truly listening and perceptive. His virtuous reputation is sincere and full, what the people look toward. May your fine trees match the sweet pear trees. Wang is the level tone.
