Pronounced cheng
As stated in the Tang Rhyme (Tangyun), it means red in color. Another theory suggests it refers to the juice of the crabapple. According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it was originally written as a variant form. It is sometimes written with the water radical as cheng, or with the radical for upright as cheng.
