According to the Tang Dynasty Rhyme Dictionary (Tangyun), the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), and the Collection of Rhymes (Yunhui), the pronunciation is chèn. According to the Correct Rhymes (Zhengyun), the pronunciation is chèn (rising tone).
According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen), it refers to the loss of baby teeth. A boy grows teeth at eight months and loses them at eight years; a girl grows teeth at seven months and loses them at seven years.
Also, according to the Broad Rhymes (Guangyun), the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), and the Correct Rhymes (Zhengyun), the pronunciation is chèn.
Additionally, according to the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), the pronunciation is chěn. The meaning is the same. It follows the character for "change" (huà) in its phonetic element.
