In Broad Rhymes (Guangyun) and Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), pronounced chang. Meaning unobstructed or free-flowing. Also meaning to reach or extend. In the Book of Changes (Yijing), Hexagram Kun: "Beauty within manifests and flows through the four limbs." The Commentary states: "When there is beauty within, it must flow freely to the outside." In the Preface to the Book of Documents (Shangshu): "Condensing the text and expanding the meaning, fully articulating the intent." Also, in the Book of Rites (Liji), Monthly Ordinances: "It is called the month of chang." The Annotation states: "Chang means to fill." Also, in the Classified Anthology (Leipian): "Meaning long." Also, a piece of zither music. In the Comprehensive Customs (Fengsutong): "The piece is named chang. Chang means to speak of its path being beautiful and unobstructed." Also, a surname. In the Chenliu Comprehensive Customs (Chenliu Fengsutong): "The Chang clan originates from Qi. During the Tang dynasty, there was Chang Dang."
