According to the Sound Anthology (Jiyun), pronounced cheng. It is the original form of the character cheng. It means to look straight ahead. Also, according to the Expanded Dictionary of Sounds and Meanings (Guangyun), pronounced cheng; according to the Sound Anthology (Jiyun), pronounced cheng. It means to peep. According to the Sound Anthology (Jiyun), it means to look with scrutiny. It was also originally written as cheng. Note: In the Jade Chapter (Yupian), it is written differently and is placed under the first (xian) radical. The Sound Anthology (Jiyun) also provides the pronunciation cheng, which also follows the first (xian) radical. However, the Guangyun and Jiyun treat the pronunciations cheng and cheng as the character cheng, thus splitting it into two separate characters. It is appropriate to consider the Jade Chapter (Yupian) as the correct reference.
