Shuowen Jiezi (Shuowen) states that cheng is a slanted pillar.

Han Yu, Poem on the Lunar Eclipse: Red dragons and black birds scorched until their mouths grew hot, feathers and manes stood on end, supporting and bracing against each other.

Also, rhyming as chang. Sima Xiangru, Changmen Fu: Carving magnolia wood into rafters, decorating with fragrant apricot wood to make roof beams. The many dense, floating pillars are arranged, pavilions and phoenix trees bracing one another.
