According to the Shuo Wen Jiezi (Shuowen Jiezi), it means to stab. According to the Guang Ya (Guangya), it means sharp. Another definition is to support. It also refers to a comet known as a chan qiang, which is interchangeable with the term chan qiang. See the entry for the character qiang for further details.

Tian chan, the name of a star. According to the Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji), Treatise on the Celestial Offices, when it retreats to the northwest, it appears after three months. The commentary notes the pronunciation is the same as the can in can ci.
