Another perspective states it is a common variant form of the character (cāo). Strategies of the Warring States (Zhanguo Ce) records: Jing Ke held a dagger and lunged toward the King of Qin. The King of Qin was startled, pulled his body up to stand, and drew his sword. The sword was too long, and he became caught on the scabbard. Note: The character (cāo) is the same as this character.
