General Rhymes (Jiyun): Pronounced can.
Shuowen Jiezi (Shuowen): To swallow.
Collection of Rhymes (Yunhui): A vulgar variant form of the character can.
Also, Five Sounds Collection of Rhymes (Wuyin Jiyun): Pronounced can. To eat.
Also, General Rhymes (Jiyun): Pronounced sun. Water poured over rice.
Note: According to Shuowen Jiezi, the character can is sometimes written as can with the water radical. Later generations erroneously simplified it to can. Furthermore, can and sun are distinct; sun is written with the evening radical, which is vulgarly corrupted to sun. Sun Yi, in his Compilation for the Instruction of Children (Shi Er Bian), discusses errors in character pronunciation, noting that some mistake can for sun, as they read the pronunciation of can as sun.
