According to the Tang Dynasty Rhyme Dictionary (Tangyun), the Rhyme Meeting (Yunhui), and the Orthodox Rhymes (Zhengyun), as well as the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), the pronunciation is bo. The Jade Chapters (Yupian) defines it as a flail, an implement used for threshing grain. The Regionalisms (Fangyan) by Yang Xiong states that in the regions of Qi, Chu, the Yangtze, and the Huai, it is called bo. The Comprehensive Explanations (Boya) defines it as a staff. Also, according to the Broad Rhymes (Guangyun), it refers to the quince, a type of fruit that resembles the pear. The Record of Flowers and Trees in Luoyang (Luoyang Huamu Ji) notes that there are twenty-seven distinct varieties of pear, and the quince is one of them.
