According to the Ocean of Texts (Pianhai), pronounced biao. It means to mark or indicate.
According to the History of Northern Wei (Beiwei Shu), in the chapter on Rituals, it describes arranging square formations for ceremonial guards, lining up infantry and cavalry in four layers, both inside and out, and erecting markers and banners.
Also found in the Huainan Masters (Huainanzi), in the chapter on Original Teachings: biaomo bolu, used to support one another. The commentary notes that biao belongs to the category of supporting pillars.
Also used in personal names. According to the Biography of Li Xin in the History of Northern Wei, there was a man named Fan Biao from Zhao Commandery.
