According to the Collection of Sounds (Jiyun), pronounced bie. The term biefu is the name of a type of insect; it is the ant. Also pronounced pie. The meaning is the same. Also pronounced bie. According to the Extensive Refinements (Boya), it refers to a butterfly, also called biefu.
According to the Jade Chapters (Yupian), it refers to the zhubie. In the River Rhapsody (Jiangfu) by Guo Pu, it is written: The red biefu leaps and spits out pearls. The commentary states: The Classic of Mountains and Seas (Shanhaijing) says: The zhubie is a type of fish shaped like a lung with eyes, having six feet, and is capable of producing pearls. The Southern Yue Records (Nanyuezhi) states that the zhubie will spit out pearls.
It is also the name of a Qiang tribe. In the Biography of Zhang Huan from the History of the Later Han (Houhan-shu), it is written: The Weimobie of the Qiang tribe and others coerced their own clansmen and invaded the region of the Three Prefectures.
