Pronounced bāng miǎn qiè (falling tone) according to "Tang Yun" and "Ji Yun," reading as "biān" (rising tone). "Shuowen Jiezi" explains it as the appearance of a newborn infant whose eyes cannot see clearly, with the character composed of "mù" (eye) and "qióng" as the phonetic component. It describes the state of a newborn's eyes as if covered by a membrane. According to "Ji Yun," it is also pronounced fāng miǎn qiè, reading as "piān" (rising tone), with the same meaning. Additionally, it is pronounced hú guān qiè, with the same pronunciation as "huán." It describes the appearance of very large eyes. In "Wang Renshou's Wangsun Fu," it is written as "biǎn biǎn lì ér huī lí." "Leipian" records that this character is sometimes written as "bī."
