Hai Collection, Upper Volume Radical: Horse (mǎ) Entry: Bao Kangxi stroke count: 14 Page 1435, Entry 16 Pronounced bao (rising tone). According to the Extensive Rhymes (Guangyun), it refers to a black horse with mixed-colored hair, today known as a black mottled horse. The Jade Compendium (Yupian) describes it as a black horse with mixed hair. The Errya (Erya), Explanation of Domestic Animals states that a black horse with white mixed hair is called bao. The commentary notes that this is the modern black mottled horse. The Collected Rhymes (Jiyun) notes it is sometimes written in a variant form. According to the Correct Meaning Guide (Zhengzitong), in the Book of Odes (Shijing), Zheng Airs, the line mentioning riding in a chariot with bao horses uses a character derived from bird and horse, which was historically interchangeable. The Rites of Zhou (Zhouli) states that a horse eight feet or taller is called a dragon. The Errya states that a horse with white eyes is called a fish. Since a horse can be named dragon or fish, it can also be named bao. The old commentary states it should not be derived from the character for bao (bustard), but this is incorrect.
